Main Objectives
The purpose of this position is for the incumbent to be responsible for all the technical aspects of the Dept of Environmental Science, especially arrangements and support for undergraduate teaching practicals and post- graduate and staff field trips; participation in and logistical support during such practicals and trips; maintenance and control of all equipment and assets; basic repairs and maintenance around the dept; setting up and maintaining relevant databases; the departmental newsletter and Departmental Website; assisting in marking of undergraduate practical assessments such as reports and verbal presentations; maintenance of records as required and direct supervision of the new technical officer.
The Requirements
A three year Technical diploma/degree in natural, agricultural or social sciences PLUS 4 years relevant experience Relevant experience includes: -
Previous experience in a similar environment where setting up practical's and organising field trips were key responsibilities.
Previous experience in Health and Safety or be in possession of a Health and Safety Certificate. Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of OHSA.
Previous experience in working in an computerised administrative environment. Must be computer literate and able to work word processing and spreadsheet packages. The ability to operate email and the internet is also necessary.
Experience in GIS and other statistical packages will be an advantage.
Must be in possession of a valid unendorsed driver's licence and be prepared to obtain a PDP licence - the Institution will cover the cost of obtaining the PDP licence. The obtaining of a PDP licence is a job requirement and as such will form part of the probation period. Failure to obtain a PDP licence during the probation period could result in the termination of employment.
At least one years staff supervision experience.
A postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage.
