Role Summary
- The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.
- The incumbent is also responsible and accountable for his/her own acts and omissions. The Enrolled Nurse will serve under supervision of the Registered Nurse in Ward.
- The incumbent will perform nursing duties in accordance with the South African Nursing Council SANC, Department of Health DOH and National Core standards.
Key outputs.
Patient Care
- Practicing patient care according to his/her Scope of Practice and assumes total responsibility for these activities.
- Be active in preparing, controlling and replenishing stock of the ward for the procedure list of the day.
- Supporting patients on arrival into the ward pre- and post-operatively.
- Monitoring patients’ observations and reports any abnormalities to the RN in charge.
- Assessing patients in order to ensure they have recovered and can be discharged.
- Evaluating the nursing care given during each phase of recovery.
- Contributing to the holistic care of patients.
- Effective Risk prevention and management.
- Effective communication with patients regarding their care.
- Promoting health and wellbeing.
- Practicing the principles of infection prevention and all Standard precautions.
- Promoting and maintaining good public relations with patients, relatives and visitors.
- Executing of all procedures according to hospital standards.
- Referring all complaints from patients and doctors to the Facility Manager / shift leader/ ward RN.
- Carrying out all departmental duties as assigned by the Facility Manager / shift leader/ ward RN.
- Delivering evidence-based nursing care.
- Ensuring that all patients have an appropriate nursing care plan.
- Communicating with the ward RN regarding any change in health status of the patient.
- Administering and managing medication in accordance with the Company’s policy and as described by SANC scope of practice.
- Ensuring the continuity of patient care by providing a thorough hand over to the theatre and recovery room staff.
- Checking the emergency trolley and defibrillator/AED.
- Checking emergency resuscitation drugs and record.
- Assessing the types of surgery to be performed and expected number of patients.
- Checking monitoring equipment and ensuring that oxygen and suction is in good working order.
- Checking the emergency call system.
Administration
- Compliance with documentation policy.
- Completing all relevant documentation and reporting all abnormalities to the person in charge of the ward.
- Ensuring that all documentation is maintained accurately and timeously reflecting ward procedures and care.
- Leaving ward clean and tidy at the end of the day’s lists and prepared for the next day before going off duty.
- Listening to and reading post-op orders as handed over by recovery room nurse.
- Ensuring proper and complete handover to the theatre/recovery staff.
- Co-signing drug check list and drug registers with the ward RN.
- Signing check list of emergency trolley.
- Ongoing audit of health records to ensure compliance.
- Ensuring all stock is well controlled and managed, charged and credited appropriately.
- Ensuring all stock is well controlled and managed appropriately.
Risk Management
- Maintaining a therapeutic, clean and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
- Adhering to Advanced Health’s medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles.
- Maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
- Reporting potential/actual risks identified.
- Responsible for ensuring correct use, cleaning and storage of equipment.
- Reporting equipment needing repair or replacement to the ward RN.
- Always maintaining professional conduct and standards in accordance with the Group’s policies and procedures.
- Always maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
Skills Profile
- Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
- Relevant registration at SANC as EN.
- Minimum of 5 years as an enrolled nurse.
- Post-Op nursing experience is essential.
- Experience within private hospital environment advantageous.
